An Iowa state board has approved an $8 million payment to an Illinois man who was permanently disabled after being hit by an Iowa Transportation Department snowplow in 2019.

The settlement was approved by a three-member Iowa State Appeal Board to Terry Bunting, 64, of Viola, Illinois.

Bunting pulled over on U.S Highway 67 in Le Claire to clear his windshield, when he was hit by the blade of a passing Iowa Transportation Department snowplow. According to court records, the snowplow driver saw Bunting and moved to retract the plow’s blade, however, he pulled the wrong lever, leaving the blade extended. 

Bunting was left paralyzed after suffering acute kidney and spine injuries, and multiple broken bones. He had already collected over $1.25 million in medical bills. It is estimated that the cost of Bunting’s future medical care would exceed over $7 million.
