The family of Amanda Carlson, a 23-year-old woman from Rochester, has reached a $550,000 settlement after she was fatally struck by a city bus while crossing South Broadway on August 22, 2006. Carlson was crossing the street at Ninth Street on her inline skates, heading to her job at Hy-Vee South. She had the walk signal when a Rochester City Lines bus, driven by John Thomas Huston, failed to stop and hit her.

The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m., and Carlson tragically lost her life as a result of her injuries. Huston was later charged with multiple offenses, including failing to stop for a red light, speeding, and careless driving. He ultimately pleaded guilty to careless driving and received a 90-day jail sentence.

The wrongful death claim was brought by Carlson’s family, who sought justice for the loss of their daughter. The case was settled during a mediation session, with the settlement amount of $550,000 to be paid by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust.
