$1.7M Settlement: Chicago Police Chase Ends in Crash
A high-speed police chase in Chicago has led to a $1.7 million settlement after a 2018 crash left an innocent bystander, Eddie Banks Jr., with severe injuries. The chase, which allegedly violated Chicago Police Department policies, is expected to cost the city $1.7 million in compensation as part of a broader $2.5 million package of settlements related to police misconduct.
The incident occurred in July 2018 when police officers Kevin Gomez and Andrius Tkachuk attempted to pull over John Tinker, who was driving a Dodge Charger. Tinker refused to stop, leading to a two-minute chase covering about a mile. The pursuit ended when Tinker’s car crashed into Banks’ vehicle at the intersection of South Stony Island Avenue and East 83rd Street. Banks, who had no involvement in the chase, suffered fractured ribs and a fractured pelvis, requiring two abdominal surgeries and a month-long hospital stay.
Banks filed a lawsuit against both Tinker and the City of Chicago, alleging that the officers’ actions violated police pursuit policies, which contributed to the crash. With Tinker unable to pay any potential damages, the city faced responsibility for the settlement.
The settlement agreement was approved by the City Council’s Finance Committee and is expected to be finalized by the full council next week.
In addition to the $1.7 million settlement for Banks, the committee also approved two other settlements related to police actions, bringing the total cost to the city to more than $2.5 million.
